Nu-R&B crooner Kyler Slater airs siren-laced single "Black Eyes" [Premiere]
Californian multi-instrumentalist Kyler Slater is sharing new free download "Black Eyes" on Best Fit.
With a plethora of malevolent noises like chain-dragging clanks, heartbeat synths, pained gasps, and echoing lurches, this is a twisted subversion of the glossy PBR&B output of The Weekend or Autre Ne Veut.
Originally focused on working with guitars in a band setup, Slater drifted towards this menacing timbre after finding himself alone from the age of 15: "When you are at the edge of destruction and loss, you are inspired to write songs that, without diving too deep, can help you process emotions and move forward."
Speaking about the track, Slater says: "The song is about a very unhealthy relationship that was based on lust. Falling in love with someone, coming to a point where you are at the lowest, and realizing you have to detach yourself from the emotions connected to that period of your life in order to move forward."
The single is released alongside a bassy remix from EvE on 2 October.
