Noréll celebrate their new EP release with the powerful and playful "Toxic Love"
Tomorrow sees the release of IY, the new EP from Danish trio Noréll. And today they give us the final brilliant taster from the record.
"Toxic Love" shows off a new side to Noréll; while "Howl" was aggressive, snapping with sharp beats and controlled by singer Marìe Louise Persson Bjarnarson, this new track - while still effortlessly confident - mixes gentle touches with impassioned moments.
Sparse percussion and synth sounds which play off like snatches of woodwind bob around Bjarnarson's strutting vocal in the verses, and when the chorus hits Viktor Hagner and Nichlas Malling ramp up the production. Layers of noise - buzzing synths, whip-crack drums, warped bass - build around Bjarnarson's voice which gets steamy and fervent as she practically yells "enough is enough". The warning signs are lit, but Noréll are inviting us in - and it's irresistible.
"This song came together pretty quickly. I had an idea and I knew I wanted it to feel honest and direct.," Bjarnarson tells us. "So while writing I tried to shut down any filters in my brain and just let it flow . I did it in one sitting without any chords or anything, just me humming and scribbling frantically for one and half hour until both melody and lyrics were done. I presented it to the guys and everything just clicked and we were done within a few days. That fast-paced process was really intuitive, and satisfying.I feel the song expresses the unfiltered emotions I felt when I wrote it. The song feels kind of pure to me."
