NONONO return with the huge pop of "Masterpiece"
After a couple of years away, Swedish trio NONONO are back with an appropriately titled new single.
"Masterpiece" is the first we've heard from NONONO since their We Are Only What We Feel album more than three years ago. If anything, the time away has made the Swedes an even better band - the track bangs right from the start and never lets up.
We spoke to Stina Wäppling to find out what's been going on with NONONO for the past few years.
BESTFIT: So where exactly have NONONO been?
Stina: We have done the opposite to previous years of touring and constant new experiences, turned to calmness and places we love. After we paused touring I went to India and lived in the hippie community Auroville for a while and after that I went on travelling Asia for about half a year, surfing the cost of Sri Lanka and Bali with the guitar as a friend. It was very lovely to let all the new experiences and emotions simmer down and have time to just be and appreciate it all. Back in Stockholm starting making music again I did this parallel with doing my masters degree in psychology, so its been very exciting to see how the travels and studies have found their way into the process of making music again. The guys been hanging out at the place they love the most, the studio, making new sounds and working with new voices and songwriters.
How has the band changed in that time?
Stina: As cheesy as it might sound I think we all have matured a great deal. Especially me going from 25 to 30. A lot of things appear a lot more uncertain to me but at the same time I feel better accepting that uncertainty. The opposing nature of things has also been a great theme writing the new songs, instead of pushing mixed uncomfortable emotions away I’ve been interested in exploring and writing about them.
What can you tell us about "Masterpiece"?
Stina: It’s about socially constructed reality and how a subjective thought or idea turns in to an objective truth if enough people gets contained by it. It could be a hype, a trend, a brand and really the whole society we live in is built and formed by our, from the beginning, subjective ideas. I think the line between subjective and objective truth is very fascinating and wanted to explore it. If someone ever claims 'Masterpiece' to be a Masterpiece it will be a very ironic victory!
Can we expect more new music soon?
Stina: The album is very close to done, so YES!
