Mwanjé connects with Sampa The Great for a journey of self-discovery in her debut single, "Wildones"
Mwanjé is using music as a means of liberation. Debuting her artistic project with “Wildones”, the track is pulsating with emotion, capturing “the ubiquitous nature of being human."
In collaboration with her sister Sampa The Great, “Wildones” displays a bold and beautiful alliance - bonded by their sisterhood. “Working with Sampa is always very natural,” Mwanjé tells Best Fit. “From putting on shows in the living room to imagining music video shoots in my grandmother’s backyard. We’ve been on this musical journey for a long time.”
Her vocals float, light as air, across the musical landscape until they collide with Sampa’s staccato flow. The visuals act as a beautiful backdrop for Mwanjé to “seek personal freedom,” surrounded by the flora and fauna of her home.
“In a more abstract light, "Wildones" expresses the fact that we are all branches of the same tree,” she explains. “The visuals were inspired by the duality of youth in action guided by a deep sense of wisdom and knowledge that’s almost otherworldly. I vividly remember the first Zoom meeting between Micheal (co-director), Calvin (producer) and I, in which one of my main requests was that they found a way to make me levitate, and that’s exactly what they did.”
“The visual inspiration comes from the track, the writing, the experience and what it all means to me. I knew this would be a different sound and felt the need to express opposition in various contexts - known and unknown, reckless youth and wisdom, culture and contemporary adaptations. It’s these colourful cinematic visuals that contain all the beautiful, mystical things I love about where I’m from and who I am.”
With connections to Botswana, Australia, and Zambia, the 23-year-old artist is guided by the richness of life. Weaving her music with the flurry of emotions that make up the human experience, Mwanjé curates a spiritual experience for the listener - forcing them to confront their pain, trauma and joy simultaneously.
“I have always found comfort in knowing I wasn’t alone,” she reflects. “The emotions and experiences expressed in this project are universal. It was a healing process for myself, and I felt like it would serve the same purpose to whoever needed it.”
“Wildones” is euphoric - transporting the listener into a sonic world enveloped with vibrancy and tenderness. “We escaping through the galaxy space,” asserts Sampa before Mwanjé floats into the atmosphere. Her journey is only just beginning.
