While most of us are still swooning over “something,” electro-pop duo MVSCLES surprised us Friday with the release of their latest track, titled “game”. The tune is darker in tone than their previous work—there’s none of the nostalgic positivity of “somethin” or the cute vocal tricks of “sweet n sour”—but hot damn do they sound like they’re having fun.
A bumping bass line that walks (perhaps stomps is a better description) all over layers of drums and claps provides the banging backbone of the song. Cat’s voice fleshes things out, sweetly sneering “I hate this game we play” over and over. I’ve alluded previously to the “record label jail” that the duo found themselves in in 2013, and it’s certainly easy to connect the dots between that experience and these lyrics. But whatever the catalyst, we the listeners are the beneficiaries: MVSCLES have delivered a banger. Dance away.
