A fresh face from the renowned Blessing Force collective, Birmingham dark-pop producer Motherhood has a new offering in the form of the raw yet classy single “The Blow”.
Many will recognise Motherhood – the new moniker for Joe Robinson – from his support slots with the likes of Metronomy and Foals, the latter of course being arguably the most successful act to come from Oxford-based Blessing Force. But those familiar with the upbeat pop, à la Jonquil and Trophy Wife, that has come to define the collective will no doubt be surprised by Robinson’s new offering.
“The Blow” is a slick track that has the raw and melodious honesty of RnB, but the grandeur of a classic film score. Indeed, lyrically the song tells the story of a man who’s ‘never gonna beat the blues’, and whilst some may find it a little too theatrical for their tastes, few will be able to deny that “The Blow” is a soulful and emotive number.
