MORGAN’s introspective “In My Feelings” catches herself on the precipice of a toxic rabbit hole
Taking control of her own romantic happiness, MORGAN self-therapises and comes out trumps in her latest track, “In My Feelings”.
In the three years since MORGAN signed to Rudimental’s label, Major Toms, the young London-based singer/songwriter has proven her versatility time and time again. From the dramatic production of her debut project “ALIEN,” dripping in nods to Y2K rap, to the darker pop echoes of recent singles “You’re Worth It” and “Behave,” her voice acts as sonic putty, moulding from genre to genre with impressive ease.
Her latest release, "In My Feelings", adds yet another notch to her now undoubtedly covered belt. Capturing that feeling of treading dangerous paths in pursuit of love, the track takes her discography on a refreshingly down-tempo turn, equal parts vulnerable and sultry in its minimalist R&B sound.
“I wrote ‘In My Feelings’ about a toxic relationship I fell into where I fell in love with somebody that I shouldn’t have,” MORGAN explains. “I think everyone can relate to that feeling - knowing you’re getting yourself into a situation that won’t end well – your head is being rational, but your heart completely takes over.”
Indeed, the track evenly glides betwixt accusation and infatuation, reason and passion, as she demands clarity from her partner. The track is full of push and pull, transparently representing the complexity of her feelings towards the relationship: “What is it you want to do?”, she sings in one line, “I think it’s clear to see you mean that much to me”, in the next. The track’s title itself portrays this well, with MORGAN clearly “in her feelings” about her partner for a duplicity of reasons.
The introspective and mature lyrics underscore a woman confidently coming into her adulthood with poise and self-value. Her voice enhances this idea, equally buttery and effortless over the piano-centric lo-fi ballad. "In My Feelings" sounds liberating, for both MORGAN and listeners, recognising the importance of these thoughts being released rather than bubbling under the surface. The track is thus one of expanse, generating the stage for pause and reflectivity as it acts as MORGAN’s own breathing room to vocalise her inner anxieties.
The accompanying music video well encapsulates this idea of release, seeing MORGAN grounding herself in an open field and learning to find her feet once more. By the end of it, she seems to be embracing a commanding stance over her two backing dancers. MORGAN also discussed the writing process as one of similar catharsis: “This is one of the zoom sessions I did throughout lockdown where I was super proud of what I had written - it probably helped that I wrote it with two good friends Sakima and Kurisu. I love everything about this song, especially its minimalist melodies – I’m super proud of it.”
The latest in a long string of accomplished and dynamic singles, “In My Feelings” teases audiences with yet another view into the kaleidoscope of MORGAN’s unbounded sound. Her sold-out debut headline show at London’s Courtyard Theatre is sure to be a celebration of this existing diverse discography, as well as a nod to all the possibilities to come.
