More Kicks are bursting at the seams on new single “I’m On The Brink”
More Kicks' “I’m On The Brink” is a glorious mess of contradictions and doesn’t really sound anything like three guys from England, Poland and Brazil.
It’s a '50s girl-group melody disguised as a fizzy garage anthem. It’s '70s NYC dirtbag new wave with an English accent. It’s a sunny-sounding singalong with lyrics that hover over the abyss and it manages to channel all of those contradictions into something remarkably cohesive. The end result? A brilliantly visceral pop song.
“One of my favourite things to do in music is to take something pristine and structured and then fuck it up slightly,” says singer/guitarist Sulli (James Sullivan). “So that might mean taking your most poppy song and recording it slightly too fast. Or writing a beautiful melody but making a lyric about falling to pieces. Especially when you’re dealing with guitar music or ‘rock n roll’ in that most general sense. It’s such a well-worn path and there’s a very fine line between classic and cheesy – self-sabotage is a great protector against that.”
Maybe the tri-nationality of the members is another factor that lifts songs like “I’m On The Brink” to that rare mix of melodic, beating-heart sincerity and raw, unshackled energy?
“Maybe,” says Sulli. “I suppose our backgrounds must add to the sound of the band. But quite honestly the fact we’re all from different countries is such a non-issue. I mean, we live in London: a total melting pot. All these bands from London that are just four English guys, how the hell are you managing to avoid playing with people from other countries?!”
