Miqui Brightside drops "Like Lovers Do" from an EP he made as a present for his girlfriend
We're increasingly drawn to the new and exciting sounds coming out of the creative Madrid bubble. The last 18-months alone has seen Hinds lead the charge, drawing attention to their musical compadres The Parrots, the solo work of Trajano! frontman Lois - and now the bedroom dance project of Miqui Brightside.
Like many of us, Madrid-born producer and photographer Miqui first found his way to music via his vinyl-advocating parents. "My parents where always playing records at home and that's why I started to buy my own records too," he tells Best Fit. It wasn't until the age of 19 that he first used a mixtable, when a friend who owned a club in Madrid asked Miqui to DJ with him. " I was really interested on it so I started to get dates [while] I was studying advertising and working as photographer."
Moving to Paris as a 22-year old, the young Spaniard spent a year setting up parties and playing more shows and returned to Madrid a year later with the resolve to make something of his musical talent. "I knew that I wanted to get more into producing, doing my own stuff," he explains. "All that year I was listened to Cashmere Cat, Moods, Odesza, the whole Future Classic...and I took all that inspiration to work on my first EP."
The debut Green Heart EP was originally recorded as a present for Miqui's girlfriend and showcases a lustrous take on Balearic-flecked house. The influence of Future Classic is obvious but the production is beautifully underplayed rather than overblown, leaving tantalising hints as to where he might go to next. As the beginning of a longer journey into music it's a truly stellar opening chapter with standout track "Like Lovers Do" featuring the vocals of 22-year old Belgium-born Demmy Sober. "I wrote to Demmy as soon as I had the beat," explains Miqui. "I knew the lyrics and the melody, I had the ideas for the song from the first moment so I think that's why I think is the one I like the most. I wanted to have a tune [where] the beat could be sung over or have some hiphop acapella dropped on it on it..."
MIqui's ambitions with the Green Heart EP are squared firmly at performance. "I want to finally to start my own gigs as producer, get a good live together and show it to people," he proudly tells us.
The Green Heart EP is released on 8 October.
