Miles From Kinshasa posts self-styled rumba-pop track "KAYA", a superb follow-up to his debut
We were more than impressed with Miles From Kinshasa's debut track "IVRY" last September, and now the Democratic Republic of Congo-born, South London-bred producer takes things up a notch with "KAYA".
Again reminiscent of the kind of muggy R&B teased by the ever-elusive Jai Paul, "KAYA" sits comfortably in its skin of clouded vocals, warm synths and darting funk guitars - much like the components of his earworm debut.
Rumba-influenced beats, however, are more prominent on this new track, cut through with tangled, multifaceted mesh of synths guided by Miles' own impressive production.
We hear the South London soloist singing about Kaya -"you were always at peace" - the song's muse who is that "one person that’s just able to read you entirely to the point that you question how much you know yourself."
"The protagonist in the song is on an internal search too," Miles adds, "but it just brings up chaos that he can’t fight alone and again this all knowing person is there to go through it with him.
"The name Kaya itself means little and wise amongst other things but generally has to do with some kind of wisdom.”
Back to the "rumba-pop" music itself, Miles explains: “I think it just came from my love of pop melodicism, or at least the idea of what pop can be in my head. And just mixing that with very rhythmic drum patterns that I feel are idiosyncratic to me.”
If this is what he thinks pop can be, or should sound like, then we're right behind him.
"KAYA” is the debut release on new South London label One Time Recordings. The single is to be released soon as a double 7" A-side with "IVRY”. Both songs are available on iTunes now.
