LA’s Michi teases the sweet sounds of summer on funky new cut “Sugarbaby”
Another sample of her forthcoming debut EP, the Angelino singer/songwriter conjures honey-like nostalgia on this sun-kissed love song.
The project of alternative pop artist Michelle Guerrero, as Michi she draws inspiration from her city base, identity, relationships, and the moment she met her birth father – an experience which lit a fire of confidence under Guerrero to pursue her dreams.
This year Michi began teasing her EP with its lead single "Nights Like This"; a bilingual track that gets steamier than any cliché could suggest. Following the hazy "Don't Know How to Behave", "Sugarbaby" rolls in with a sepia-tinged sound and the kind of glow you get when you crank the Instagram warmth filter to its maximum.
Her latest effort continues to explore a more passionate side of her songwriting, documenting the highs of falling in love. ""Sugarbaby" is a sentimental ode to expressing love and admiration for that special someone," Guerrero explains.
With the EP becoming a project to be completed within lockdown, Michi says "[it] was not easy, ["Sugarbaby"] for me was an escape into a colourful place, and the chance to express adoration of a lover in all their beauty and light."
Drawing Michi's eclectic influences together, "Sugarbaby" is a funk-flecked homage to basking in the power of a new love and radiates that energy throughout its two and a half minute runtime. Short, but intoxicatingly sweet.
