NYC collective MICHELLE share their fearlessly funky single “The Bottom”
Recently signed to Transgressive Records, New York City troupe MICHELLE share their genre-bending single “The Bottom”, taken from their debut album HEATWAVE.
New York City has always been the epicentre for creativity, whether homegrown or imported from those eager to shoot their shot and make the pilgrimage. At the forefront of the current scene are MICHELLE, a formidable new collective with a genre-bending approach to songwriting.
Marrying bright indie-pop tones shot with a playful injection of European disco (think French band Phoenix’s later work) as well as 80s synths and funk grooves, their single “The Bottom” is one of those numbers that is fresh yet familiarly fuzzy. The track is buoyant and euphoric, conjuring thoughts of all those sweaty summer stints between garden parties and the club, and is at once an accurate reminiscence and a corporeal daydream.
A troupe of predominantly queer and POC members, MICHELLE’s music offers a snapshot into their generation’s scene and the relatable recollections of their lyrics. Taken from their self-produced debut album HEATWAVE, “The Bottom” is a brief snapshot into the lives of its members and the near-mythical setting of the Big Apple.
“The song is an ode to the East river,” shares vocalist Emma Lee, who penned the lyrics. “Whispering worries to my mom by the river, mustering up the courage to dive in without fear - diving into what scares me, or into this loyal body of water”.
