Meg Baird conjures a ghostly fog on "Mosquito Hawks" [Premiere]
San Francisco-based folk singer Meg Baird is set to release her third solo LP, Don’t Weigh Down The Light next month and Best Fit is pleased to premiere the latest track from that album, “Mosquito Hawks”.
Baird’s lineage stretches back to family involved in the Appalachian folk scene in the late 19th century, which was built in large part on British and Irish folk music brought by immigrants to the US. So, it’s no surprise that Baird draws heavily from that sound, leading to her frequent comparison to the likes of Sandy Denny.
“Mosquito Hawks” is an archetypal vehicle for Baird’s traditional finger-picked guitar and plaintive, crystalline vocals, though this time coloured by a cache of sonic accents. Wisps of light percussion and a phantom 12-string accompaniment serve as ghostly counterpoints to Baird’s even-keeled delivery, creating the same calm yet unsettled mood as the fog that hangs over San Francisco bay.
