Maude Latour rejects bad energy in “Block Your Number”

Following the release of “One More Weekend”, “Furniture” and last year’s stellar EP Starsick, rising pop artist Maude Latour returns with her latest bop “Block Your Number”.

No one can deny that Generation Z are a passionate bunch; the past few years have seen a growing movement of political youth who are invested in pushing back the establishment when it comes to protecting the environment and fighting against social injustice.

At 20-years-old, Maude Latour has been finding her confidence in expressing herself through her music and lyrics. A journey that began with the release of her 2019 EP Starsick and saw the New York City artist reflect upon where she and her friends fit into the present world, this year’s singles “Furniture” and “One More Weekend” have only helped to establish her movement of personal freedom.

Rejecting the notion of small talk in a year where the concept has been almost distasteful, “Block Your Number” sees Latour cut right to the core without feeling the need to soften her words. Remarking on the irony of poor connection whilst talking over FaceTime, Latour’s songwriting has developed with laser beam precision that does not allow for any time wasting - in both the lyrics and melody.

Careering forth with a brisk pop-punk rhythm and stomping beat, “Block Your Number” is a reflective diary entry of lyrical snippets akin to fellow pop maverick Lorde. Chunky synths whirl into a frenzy before being released in an unabashed barrage; “Modern love is so damn romantic” quips Latour with a knowing wink that, despite our swathe of technological options for convenient connection, we are anything but. Perhaps in realising, there is a glimmer of hope that, as a society, we are one step closer to changing our ways.
