For those who don’t know – probably most of you – a matagot is spirit embodying the form of an animal, typically a cat, which can be both a blessing and a curse to its owner depending on the owner’s treatment of it. Suffice to say, the fresh-faced Southeast London quartet of the same name have proven to be nothing but the former.
Following from their debut single released a couple months back, we here at Best Fit are pleased to premiere Matagot’s latest track, “Britney”, another glimpse of NX Records’ second installment of their Crossing Lines compilations.
Just when you thought the foursome was treading the now oft-familiar Daughter -esque brooding chamber-folk at “Britney”s outset, Matagot bear their teeth and blow it open with treble-soaked snare claps and punchy power chords. In case you were wondering about that title, too, it’s deliciously tongue-in-cheek, evoking its pop-princess namesake and turning her on her head in the chorus, “If you hit me one more time / baby / I’ll die.”
The NX Records compilation, Crossing Lines II, is out 17 November followed by the album release show at St. James Hatcham Church at Goldsmiths University in London. The album and tickets to the show are both available via the label’s Bandcamp page.
