Margrete is the only (possibly teenage) Norwegian electronic-jazz producer you need in your life
From Oslo, possibly a teenager (given the song title) and definitely talented, meet Margrete and her debut single "Teen".
Beginning with low buzzing synths and off-beat percussion, "Teen" is an unsteady introduction to the world of Margrete.
The shifting electronics call to mind the likes of Boards of Canada, Braids and Hundred Waters, and while Margrete has a sort of sing-song vocal style, it's pitch-shifted enough to create a sinister air to the track.
As the Norwegian sings "damned if I do / damned if I don't / drown if I sink / burn if I float" it's clear she's existing in some sort of liminal state. Nineteen, regarded on one side as too young, too green and on the other too grown, Margrete tells a tale of a woman yet to become an individual "yet to grow a spine" and constantly trying to catch up.
Yet "Teen" is confident, assured and beautifully composed - and we'd love to hear more.
