Malaika shines on Niles Rogers-inspired jazz-pop crossover "Stop For A Minute"
Malaika experiments as she continues to carve out her own path, and new single "Stop For A Minute" marks a progressive turn in the road.
Hailing from Leeds, British singer/songwriter Malaika has long toyed with the confines and safety of her jazz-inspired pop sound. Her second single "Stop For A Minute", co-written and produced with Grammy-nominated John Beck, pushes her out of this comfort zone with its greater emphasis on rhythm, soul, and some more electronic production.
"I wanted to experiment with synth bass sounds this time around and after listening to quite a bit of Nile Rodgers recently I wanted to incorporate a more funk driven element," Malaika explains. "I am writing a lot at the moment and I want to explore this new sound more in future tracks too."
Her astute ability to bring together jazzy melodies, soulful vocals, and, now, elements of funk echoed in the track's instrumentation, means this singer/songwriter's repertoire is set to expand in quality as well as quantity.
