Makeness expertly fuses brass with techno and house on the dance-ready "14 Drops"
Makeness returns with his first piece of music since relocating from the Outer Hebrides to London - and it's stellar stuff.
Meshing together brass blasts with bouncy house beats and techno dirge, "14 Drops" is an inspiring experiment in joining together the organic and the synthetic.
Makeness explains the track was written "with a live setting in mind, so a lot of the elements are playable rather than having to use samples.
"A lot of my favourite tracks hit the perfect combination of live instrumentation and mechanised electronics. Hopefully I’ve come close here!"
He's more than come close. It's easy to imagine "14 drops" uniting a crowd with numinosity: its spiralling dance rhythms, thick swabs of sub, guitar twangs, and warped vocals congealing into something that's completely its own.
"14 Drops" is remarkable writing from a producer who's surely on the cusp of something special.
Makeness releases his second double-a-sided single, "14 Drops / Acid Dad", on May 27 via Handsome Dad Records. His plays Electrowerkz (supporting Beaty Heart) on April 13 and The Great Escape Festival this May.
