Macajey's "Do You Have Fire?" is a scintillating, jittering beast with a lot of heart
Macajey, otherwise known as Jeremy Macachor, has revealed the first single from his second album Surfing the Air due out later this summer and it's a totally winning formula of off-kilter beats and dreamy vocals.
"Do You Have Fire?" is a track that is built upon beats that are so delicately balanced, it feels as though if one were to go amiss the whole thing would fall apart instanteously. Fortunately, that never happens and instead we get a track that feels intricate and startling in its pounding energy, where winding guitars circle upwards in a whirlpool motion.
Reminiscent of the interweaving complexity of Animal Collective, the whole song feels experimental without deserting its pop sensibility that firmly grounds the gushing melodies that overlap to beautiful effect.
Explaining the meaning behind the track and the act of sharing that it celebrates, Macajey says it's really inspired by the phrase that Estonians commonly use when they ask for a light, "It’s about the feeling of sharing and giving to each other when it’s really, really cold out. There’s another Estonian saying that goes, 'A flame doesn’t lose to share', meaning, you can take one candle and light a hundred more with it, and the original candle won’t lose its own flame."
Overall, it's a wonderfully warming track that ushers in a new creative phase for the artist.
