M-Phazes' "Golden Years" is the breath of fresh air pop needs right now
M-Phazes is a man on a mission. A mission to make all of your childhood memories seem somehow inadequate.
Latest track "Golden Years" is a knock-out pop tune, with its ante upped upon the revelation that vocalist RUEL is only 14 years old. At 14 I just spent lunchtimes in the library, an unintentional ode to Cady Heron from the movie Mean Girls.
"Golden Years" may not be original in its styling, but there is more to sink your teeth into here. Fed up of faux-soul tracks clogging up the charts, "Golden Years" is a light breath of fresh air. Despite its relatively predictable formula, RUEL and M-Phazes have stumbled upon a powerful partnership.
The lyrics may be a little shallow for some, but in spite of this you can practically feel Zayn Malik quaking in his - no doubt very expensive - boots. We accept the pop songs we think we deserve, and "Golden Years" has the potential to revive this frankly embarrassing period of pop.
