LUV win us over with '80s-tinged debut track “Loving Somebody”
If you love the lazy drawl and effortless pop of The 1975, yet would prefer not to associate yourself with Matty Healy’s controversial Twitter rants and the antics of their rabid fanbase, LUV are the band for you.
Debut cut “Loving Somebody” is an exercise in polished indie-pop, all distorted vocal samples and hazy guitars. There’s the obligatory references to getting high and dreaming about an unnamed object of affection, but you’d have to be quite the cynic not to admit that it’s pretty bloody listenable. All this, and they’re just cooking it up in lead singer Eliot Parsons’ bedroom!
“It’s about trying to get over somebody who’s already gotten over you, someone who’s away and started a new life elsewhere,” says Parsons. “I had this really negative topic and I wanted to juxtapose that by turning the whole thing into a giant pop song, which I think masks the context a little bit. It’s not meant to make people feel sad!” The band’s references range from the classic (Michael Jackson), to the cool (Bon Iver), to the questionable (Phil Collins, apparently), but there’s no doubt that the result is a splendid slice of pop.
