Luna Shadows delivers darkly dynamic new single "lowercase"
Despite her recent signing, California artist Luna Shadows retains a very individual approach to her immersive quirk-pop. New single "lowercase" is no exception, boasting production from Brad Hale of Now, Now and a forthcoming high-concept video.
"Everyone has a person in their life that has the ability to devastate, quickly and effortlessly," Luna Shadows explains of the inspiration behind the track. "'lowercase' is a song about recognising your power through awareness in a situation where you have been made to feel incredibly small by another. This takedown is detailed through a central metaphor, a reference to millennial digital communication 'you break me down to lowercase / the capitals you take for only you.'"
On "lowercase", the sweetness of Luna Shadows' vocal is occasionally warped out of shape, lending an Uncanny Valley sense to the track that pairs beautifully with its central metaphor. The inspiration she takes from the digital world sparks throughout the track, with its influence – sometimes malevolent, sometimes benign – particularly shines in Hale's darkly dynamic production. This is a heartbreak ballad elevated into another beast altogether.
Luna Shadows also reveals some details about the forthcoming visuals for "lowercase", saying: "The video is a juxtaposition of my life on the east side of Los Angeles and our collective experiences as digital natives. The voyeuristic pixelated 'others' symbolize followers (or unfollowers): digital presences dressed in shades of blue to represent the glow of a computer screen. The choreography/movement mimics the digital movements we see everyday: glitching, buffering, and taking forever to load. Like the old adage says: 'dance like your internet connection keeps cutting out.'"
