Lully's new single "Sans Chapeau" finds the perfect mix of bizarre and beautiful
Electronic producer and pop abstractionist Lully has dropped his second track “Sans Chapeau”, and it’s just as esoteric as you’d expect from somebody who named themselves after a 17th century French composer that died because he refused to stop dancing.
“Sans Chapeau”, released on London label Aesop, is a mixture of distorted synths and slap bass complemented by samples that sound like somebody throwing a collection of household objects down the stairs, but it somehow all pulls together to create a coherent and almost hypnotic sound. There’s something about the Lully’s music that’s reminiscent of a fairground funhouse, with each layer both intriguing and bewildering in its own unique way. There’s even the creak of a closing door at the end of the track, a signal that you’re about to leave the inside of Lully’s brain and re-enter the real world.
Lully’s debut track “Slow D’s” was one of Annie Mac’s New Names and entered the UK Viral chart at #11, and his latest offering is just as good, if not better.
