Lolo Zouaï drops more introspective R&B alt-pop on “Lose Myself”
Paris-born Lolo Zouaï's mellow new offering “Lose Myself” feels truly authentic to her, succinctly telling a narrative of a girl who's pursued the city in search of bigger things.
The track is a lo-fi shift from the more pop-driven “Jade”, on which she collaborated with Blood Orange (aka Dev Hynes). The woozy cry of despair about lack of self-identity is instantly relatable and strangely distant all at once.
The multi-lingual 23-year-old hasn't put a foot wrong so far in 2019 as she presents her infectious double A-side “Ocean Beach”.
The visuals for “Lose Myself” were shot in collaboration with Zouaï’s good friend and film maker Hanna Hotchkiss who also made the video for “So Real”. “I had just finished my last show of the year at Rolling Loud LA, and I flew home to San Francisco for a few days to hang out and drive around the city,” says Zouaï. “The song is about my adolescence so it was important for me to go back to my favourite spots growing up: Ocean Beach, Quickly’s (my go to boba spot in high school), and the Sylos (abandoned building behind the car shot). Sevan’s was the liquor store that used to sell alcohol to us in high school; but obviously it got shut down so we couldn’t film anything there!”
