Listen: Lola Colt - "Driving Mr. Johnny"
Psychedelia, a subgenre seemingly situated in a specific moment in time – or certainly, a specific state of mind – its ceiling is high but its propensity for mind-grating nadirs can seem so much higher.
These days, psych-rock tends toward feathery and ebullient; consider Tame Impala’s dexterous but oh so comfy employment of fuzzy, gauzy, echo-laden atmosphere. Lola Colt offers a spell-binding alternative; hearkening back to such scene progenitors as Jefferson Airplane and The Doors, the London sextet’s brand of psych is raw, intense, and menacing.
The band’s latest single, “Driving Mr. Johnny”, from their upcoming debut LP, Away From The Water, is propelled by their unfettered, hypnotic blend of psychedelia and post-punk and driven by impeccably named vocalist Gun Overbye’s commanding presence, equal parts PJ Harvey and Grace Slick.
Away From The Water is out 27 October courtesy of Fuzz Club Records, with “Driving Mr. Johnny” available for immediate download with all preorders at the band’s website. Catch their insidiously captivating live show on the following upcoming dates across the UK:
