Lokoy returns with off-kilter heartbreak anthem "never missed you like i do now"
The experimental world of Norwegian producer Lokoy expands with another dazzling duet.
Launching his solo career with a girl in red duet, Lokoy's debut single "Malibu" fizzed with potential as he drew upon his vast influences to create his own singular sound. His vision expanded to his multi-faceted EP Can We All Go To Bed and is now being shaped into his first full-length album on which "never missed you like i do now" is set to take centre stage.
The track began life in the back of a tour van while Lokoy was on the road with Sløtface (he's their bassist) last year. However, it could've been doomed from the beginning when said tour van was broken into and thieves made away with two guitars and a synth. Luckily they didn't find the backpack holding Lokoy's laptop and the first demo of the single or take his other synth which he used to craft the melody of the chorus.
The pulsing pop heart of the track is brought to life as Lokoy trades lines with his unnamed counterpart. Originally conceptualised around his homesickness, the track's meaning mutated taking on a life of its own as different collaborators jumped on board to the finish the track. Homesickness turned into a fear of the future and getting lost in life as a touring musician before transforming into a fear of losing loved ones.
“I guess I’m coming to a point in my life where I’m really starting to realise that everything around me is temporary," Lokoy explains. "For example, my parents are getting older. And now thoughts like “I have to spend time with them before it’s too late” are new to me. That’s what sparked the line “I never missed you like I do now”. Though Chloe, who sings on the track, interpreted the line completely different, which I love. For me that chorus means many things, because it has different intentions behind it.”
A second taste of his forthcoming album "never missed you like i do now" follows this year's "classic city girl" which was reimagined into an 11-track remix package with creative interpretations from a whole cast of exciting future-thinking artists.
