Method Records signee Liv Dawson delivers sharp-edged piano pop with the flawless “Reflection”
With polished production supporting effortless vocals, “Reflection” – released on Method Records – marks Liv Dawson out as a cut above.
Having caught the attention of Spotify and Apple Music’s most influential playlisters with “Tapestry” and “Still”, Liv Dawson shows another strong hand with “Reflection”: a confessional pop ballad finished with edgy, contemporary production.
Despite the continued notable production credentials, this time from Levi Lennox (responsible for Zayn’s “Pillowtalk”) and longtime Sam Smith collaborator Jimmy Napes, the impression left by “Reflection” is that Dawson is really starting to carve out her own signature sound - one which contrasts dark bass lines and strong piano-pop with her earthy, soft vocals.
In a similar vein to her previous releases, the overall feel of “Reflection” is both present and warm, with her closely mic’ed vocals providing the intimacy to support the introspective lyrics: “I can’t run away/I have nowhere to hide/so tell me the secrets/that you hold deep inside.”
With a plethora of talented young female vocalists treading a not-so-distant-path - Charlotte Day Wilson, JONES and Bishat to name a few - what sets Dawson apart is her faultless live vocal performance. To see for yourself, catch her as the main support on tour with Atlantic Records' Honne, which reaches London on 28 October.
