Remember last week when North London rapper Little Simz dropped a ‘stripped’ version of her track "Wings" to announce the title of her forthcoming LP? Well, this week she’s unveiled "Dead Body", a further insight into the album which has since been circulated online to underline the point that the album, A Curious Tale Of Trials + Persons, will be released on her own label on 18 September.
Opening the Jeremy Cole-directed clip by saying: “we all have our demons / our thoughts / our imperfections and our insecurities / none of which make us inhumane” immediately puts Simz’s humanity charged tale in a decidedly darker mode - a mood that’s ably reflected in the rather stark and unflinching monochrome film. Talking openly and frankly about her frustrations with the world around her, dissecting her own personality and the way society can be blissfully ignorant of the plights of others, she croons on one of the bridges: “I just might sell my soul / because I don’t feel like I’m a part of the world no more”. And, frankly, addressing topics like this head on and with clarity is exactly where her lyrical impact lies.
Simz is out to be uncompromising and innovative and aggressive and the absolute antithesis of what everybody thinks they want for her. With every wayward glancing shot she’s proving that there’s more direction in sticking to her guns and being a fireball of an emcee than a lot people give her credit for.
