Last month, we fell in love with the first drop from Bristolian collective Young Echo’s debut LP, Nexus. And just as we were weaning ourselves off the infatuating ‘Jupiter Rise’ and its nebulous wisps of sensual synth; the collaborative producers have premiered their superbly gloomy first single, ‘Blood Sugar’ out on 28 April.
Given that Young Echo are comprised of almost a dozen contributing beatmakers of varying backgrounds including Zhou, Kahn, El-Kid and Vessel; you’d be forgiven for expecting a scattered mish-mash of genres and styles nailed loosely together. However, as with ‘Jupiter Rise’, the talented troupe offer more surprisingly sparing production with swells of calming male vocals stretched over spiraling layers of distorted electronics and softly shuffling hi-hats.
This measured approach yields a delightfully woozy product. Jarring with the standardized, bolshy techniques of many other bass collabs; ‘Blood Sugar’ signals Young Echo’s intent to transcend genre boundaries and carve out a sound of their own. Keep an eye out for Nexus, due out on 27 May through Ramp Recordings
