White Dudes mix mystery, intrigue, and modern disco on the unexpected, weird and wonderful "Word Up"
The 10k Islands-affiliated White Dudes are an as-of-yet fairly unknown band who sound absolutely nothing like you would expect a fairly unknown band named White Dudes to sound.
Whilst there is an unavoidable irony to the name, in particular when help up against the elated, audacious updated throwback to '70s disco classics that "Word Up" channels, the mysterious collective have hit the ground running in creating a sound that is very much out of left-field.
Although "Word Up" hits with an unashamedly slick production, and with beats that could seemingly fill a dance floor for days, there is a real, soulful heart to White Dudes, born from an appreciation for classic funk and soul music and a real understanding of what modern, exciting, uninhibited dance-ish music should be.
With lo-fi disco (three words that you never expect to see in the same sentence together) becoming more of a common exploration for artists, White Dudes have put a real stamp on their declaration to "send 1970's cocaine pop disco dancing into the 21st century". With a commitment to the cause of being able to soundtrack the hazy hours after Saturday night ends but when Sunday morning hasn't quite hit, "Word Up" is White Dudes' good time anthem that fits into this foggy headed void, but doesn't completely fill it - "Word Up" is a burst of energy to get you through the bleary eyed, 5am dawn, but there is a hell of a lot more to come after this.
