Vic Mensa takes pot shots at the entire game and hits his target on "Heat It Up (Freestyle)"
With the whole of hip hop focussing deep on the concept of ghost-writers and the business-minded motivations of the written rap game, the Chicago-born Roc Nation signing, Vic Mensa just dropped another track that demonstrates a lot more than just his rhyming chops.
Cut loud in the vein of his Kanye West collaboration, "U Mad", Mensa’s "Heat It Up (Freestyle)" states, in no uncertain terms, that he’s more than just hungry. In fact, if you were to follow this tenuous food based analogy to its logical conclusion then, on this new one, Mensa’s practically stooped over the stove, staring deep into the pot and sprinkling a secret blend of herbs and spices into the simmering broth.
Flick your mind back a week or so ago when Drake dropped his Meek Mill burying "Back To Back Freestyle" for a minute. It was more than evident in it that there was [finally] a very specific kind of ‘you fucked with the wrong guy’ vitriol that pulled itself through the body of the song. If you took that then wrapped it in bacon, popped an oiled up scotch bonnet pepper in the middle, stuck it hard with a cocktail stick and baked it in the oven on a low heat for an hour or two it’d probably gave you a taste of the over-salted bite that Mensa delivers here. Except Vic isn’t just gunning for one specific, outspoken guy here, he’s taking pot shots at the entire game and he’s repeatedly hitting the target.
