Montreal’s thriving music scene proves there is no shortage of emerging acts to watch, the most recent being the darkly electronic duo, Valleys whom introduce us to the second single, ‘Hounds’ off their debut release for Kanine Records.
A cinematic darkness reserved for grandiose moments that words could never properly describe, meets gauntly shadows of vocal eclipses, in the vein of Chromatics but with all of the whimsical removed. Drawing comparisons to Portland husband-wife duo, Keith and Hollie Keniff’s Mint Julep project, if actually seen to fruition, Valleys evoke that similar, instantly intriguing, and a bit frightening impression upon first listen. What really grabs us by the back of the neck and won’t let go is the duo’s dramatic and rushing, larger-than-life sonic builds, that bleed through the synth-beckoned chords of their second single ‘Hounds’.
Claiming the song was inspired by a string of untimely family deaths, singer Tille Perks adds a poignant frame of reference to the concept of mortality saying, “You are drowning. But don’t despair; there are more important things than life.”
