Listen: Threepwood - "New Abode"
Human nature, let alone the so-called 'blogosphere', seems unable to resist the enigmatic newcomer. From James Blake's blurred image to Jungle's rise out from behind breakdancing or roller-blading dancers, withholding identity remains as powerful a PR tool ever. Enter Threepwood.
We know almost nothing about the London-based, keys-driven project other than sighting influences such as Radiohead and Grizzly Bear, most importantly is what we hear from this wonderfully intriguing debut release.
A powerful, haunting vocal leads the way, building a hue of bucolic mystery above increasingly intricate, dark production. The shadowy atmosphere goes hand in hand with the aforementioned intrigue, setting a brooding and somewhat uneasy tone, as electronic elements marry with organic instrumentation in this attention-grabbing outing streaming below.
"New Abode" comes from a debut EP The Final Piece, which is available as a free download via an interactive puzzle on the artist website. Fans of Bat For Lashes, Broken Twin and fellow melancholic, female-lead projects should welcome the appearance - albeit in a shroud of mystery - of the impressive, enigmatic Threepwood.
