Listen: The Mary Onettes – Love's Taking Strange Ways [Best Fit Premiere]
As reported back in December, noir-pop group The Mary Onettes have teamed up with Dan Lissvik of the recently defunct Gothenburg production duo Studio for their new Love Forever EP. Producing two of the EP’s four tracks, Lissvik has masterfully mutated the Onettes’ often bleak 80s tinged sound into something strangely euphoric. No less still fuelled by Philip Ekström’s mournful croon, ‘Love’s Taking Strange Ways’ is a statement of intent that shapes up the remaining three songs contained within Love Forever’s short but undeniably sweet 15 minute run time.
With off-kilter drums and an irrestible bass line, the song erupts at the one minute mark with a chorus that conjurs up a ridiculous amount of emotion deep down in the pit of the stomach. Fuelled with longing and irrepressible heartache, Ekström’s lyrics some of his earnest to date: “You will never let me go, you will never take me back” / “I can’t sleep alone, I need a heart to breathe” – the meeting of Lissvik and The Mary Onettes has produced one of the finest Swedish pop singles in recent memory. Flawless.
