London electronic outfit The Hics began streaming their debut single ‘Cold Air’ last night. The six-piece are letting very little information about themselves slip into the public conscious but if this elegant new cut is anything to go by; we’ll be hearing an awful lot more about them in the near future.
‘Cold Air’ recalls a sound akin to a female fronted version of The 1975 from an equally monochromatic parallel universe with its shimmering pools of synthesizer and thuds of desolate percussion melting blissfully into vocalist Roxane’s soulful tones. There’s a distinctly organic feel to ‘Cold Air’, subtle bass notes float alongside gently teased sax and guitar parts; textures often buried under swathes of heavy production on many post-dub tracks. Bottling a clean, free-flowing aesthetic seems to come naturally to The Hics, hell they’re probably doing it better than many of their more established peers.
