London-based label Aesop has struck gold recently with the caps-lock crew of SOHN and TĀLĀ gaining widespread attention, and they look to continue that good fortune with the signing of newcomers Sylas. If debut cut “Hollow” is any indication, they’ve got nothing to worry about.
With generous helpings of deadpan emotion, vocal modulation, and ambling percussion, “Hollow” comes off like a slightly less insane version of “The Children”, the gloriously strange opening track of Yeasayer’s Odd Blood or—perhaps more relevant, given the label association—a chopped and screwed remix of a Tremors outtake.
Outside of an angelic voice/synth combo that occasionally drops in from the heavens, “Hollow” is intentionally cold, abstract, and challenging. The near-robotic refrain of “wait on me” seems designed to push casual listeners to do quite the opposite, but those who stick around will reap the rewards.
