Sun Girls, a side-project of indie-rock group The Magic Gang, have released their debut track, “Crocodile”. A blissed-out, funky two-step that rolls along like a summer evening stroll in Sideways Park: the psychedelic, colour-splashed cousin of New York’s Central.
The brain-child of Brighton boys Kristian Smith and Paeris Giles sees a change in direction from the indie-rock à la Jake Bugg of The Magic Gang’s recent releases. Instead, “Crocodile” combines soporific, soothing guitar riffs drenched in reverb, with laid-back, baggy, stoner-beats and a tranquilisingly gentle yet indelible bassline. Heartfelt and hypnotic lead vocals evoke images of late-70s Supertramp, whilst the boys add their own best effort at a Beach Boys impression in some blissfully melancholic chantings which backup the lead.
All in all, “Crocodile” is a perfect revival of 90s psych-rock, tinged with elements of beat-era pop, oodles of beach-funk, topped off with some of the lads’ own feel for dreamy, spaced out guitar balladry.
Smith and Giles’ main project, The Magic Gang, released their lead single, “Shallow”, and it can be heard at the group’s Soundcloud, here.
