Listen: Steve Mason & Emiliana Torrini – I Go Out
Speedy Wunderground is the new label venture from Franz Ferdinand and Bat For Lashes producer Dan Carey who aims to record each release in one day, keep overdubs to a minimum and work through lunch in order to capture an authentic snapshot of the day’s work.
The first Speedy Wunderground release ‘I Go Out’ which features contributions from Steve Mason, Emiliana Torrini and psych rockers TOY, will be released on 25 February on limited 7”. This quick turnaround is indicative of Carey’s ten-point mission statement as he looks to leapfrog the period of stagnation symptomatic of all too many independent labels. ‘I Go Out’ mirrors the overall ethos of Speedy Wunderground as streaks of white-hot guitar and distorted vocal echoes hitch a ride on the throbbing motorik beat.
The pace of the recording process leaves a slightly jarring imprint on the track but that tension is soon washed away when the intricately honeyed melodies begin to meld into one. ‘I Go Out’ is arguably the most fun you could have in seven minutes today.
