Texan musician SORNE moved us earlier this year with the robust ‘Ego Altar’, the first track to be taken from his forthcoming second full-length of the same name.
The Austin native – also known as Morgan Sorne – has invoked more of those touching to the point of heart-rending emotive recollections of his father on new cut ‘Blessed Redeemer’. Clanging bells and pulsing arterial basslines are foregrounded in the melody but it’s the more delicate strokes including angelic female vocals, layered under the mix that add a genuine, human touch to the arrangement. Sorne’s operatic tones sound at first somewhat reflective, ponderous almost, before exploding in the latter half of the song; wounded and animalistic, they teeter on overblown but his self-conscious lyrics ensure the atmosphere remains poignant, rather than pastiche. Baroque pop has seldom sounded so alluring.
