While we here at TLOBF have been going a bit weak at the knees for the fringe and, to a lesser extent, music of beat-bro Seams, our schoolboy infatuation has resulted in us grossly overlooking fellow sibling-in-samples (not recognised by actual British law) London-based producer Shells.
This could turn into a touching trashy comedy-drama where the protagonist first dates the bad boy jock before falling in love with the sweet younger brother at the end. Kinda like the plot of 2006 teen movie ‘John Tucker Must Die’ in which, SPOILER ALERT, John Tucker does not actually die – rendering the whole film and your past two hours somewhat pointless.
Shells, or Khalid Rafique if you want to get all personal, has already been making a name for himself with a series of singles, the wonderful Pastels EP, as well as remixes of Southern Shores and Welch’s very own ‘Nightcycles’. These new tracks, ‘Arctic’ and ‘Spiders’, see the producer in a hypnotic mood with the latter tinkering away with a cascade of synth bleeps and hi-hats while the brooding former track sets the light switch a little bit dimmer.
