Listen: Puppy - "The Great Beyond"
They've tagged themselves as 'heavy metal' before, now Puppy are shaking off their collar and really ripping free.
"The Great Beyond" is a sprawling four-minute exodus that doesn't pa(w)se for a moment. Power-pop verses and distinctively husky vocals race alongside raw, ruff guitars (we'll quit with the puns now). "You've got it all, so show it," the lyrics beckon - and that's exactly what Puppy are doing here.
Infectious power-pop gives way to a screeching guitar solo that wouldn't be out of place in a mullet-rock smash hit. Blinding and blazing, layers of riffs entwine with anthemic percussion, primed to blow you away.
Coupled with debut track "Forever," this spells as promising a start as a band can make. As their soaring melodies burrow into your senses, like a dog with a bone, you won't be able to let them go.
