Along with Bristol’s Howling Owl Records, Exeter-based indie, Art Is Hard, are flying the flag for DIY fuzz/indie-rock with more vivacity than any of their peers in 2013. The latter however, are dipping into previously uncharted waters with their new signing, 18-year-old Bristolian vocalist and polymath, Ellen Davies aka /please/.
Drawn from the /please/ EP, due out via Art Is Hard on 22 July, ‘Chevrons’ is a sombre, moving acoustic ballad punctuated by Ellen’s elegiac, hollowed-out murmuring and a softly fluttering piano motif. Self-doubt trickles through the veiny lyricism, ‘how can I be the best? when everything is moving around me’, the warm embrace of her palpitating guitar chords offering solitary comfort as the dainty paean draws in.
/please/ is out 22 July on limited edition ‘ghost white’ cassette.
