TOPS man David Carriere makes dreamy coming-of-age pop under the Paula moniker in his spare time; most of which sounds like it could have fallen straight off the Sixteen Candles soundtrack.
Carriere dropped debut LP, Relaxed Fit, on Arbutus Records (Grimes, Blue Hawaii) imprint Movie Star last year while shimmery new cut, ‘Totally Nice’, is drawn from the vinyl re-release, out on 16 July via Ethereal Sequence. Grimes credits the Montreal musician as a prime mover in her first forays into pop.
‘Totally Nice’ provides a perfect snapshot depicting why a young Claire Boucher felt so inspired to emulate the songwriter; his glossy crooning complimented by noodling guitars, ticking 808s and aching synths. Pop in its purest, unblemished form.
