Listen: Mood Rings – Pathos y Lagrimas
New Mexican Summer signees Mood Rings have unveiled the first single from their forthcoming debut album, VPI Harmony.
‘Pathos y Lagrimas’ - roughly meaning ‘pity and tears’ for those of you fluent in neither Greek nor Spanish – is about as waifishly constructed as indie-pop comes without blending into a sort of lumpy lo-fi soup. Anchored by a rock steady drum beat that barely deviates from the same pattern of echoing snare, clacking hi-hat and muted kick; the rest of the space is freed up for the band to stamp some individual touches on the melody. Rubbery to-and-fro bass, warm showerings of warped guitar and a brusque vocal, delivered with an eerie hiss ensure Mood Rings don’t veer too candidly into pleasantly forgettable shoegaze territory.
‘Pathos y Lagrimas’ remains more the product of a darkly exciting imagination than your average blissful daydream.
VPI Harmony is out on 24 June via Mexican Summer.
