Welsh newcomers Mapstone introduce their home-spun folktronica via DIY demo, “Shelter”.
Syncopated electro beats, meaty vocal harmonies and darting keys whir at speed, making it rather easy to get lost in the track’s warm textures. Recorded atop a hill farm in rural Wales, “Shelter” has an immersive, introspective nature, yet somehow projects itself across valleys with big choral singing and otherworldly piano. Though a little limited in its production, the pillars of the song stand tall.
Mapstone play The Borderline, London on 1 February.
