There’s no shortage of wannabe pop stars strapping on MicroKorg’s and aiming for stratospheric status in Sweden right now; but that’s not to say Stockholm’s MAASAI are just another magazine beautiful duo hoping to stumble upon that magic formula perfected by fellow Scandi alchemists Lykke Li, Icona Pop et al. Quite the opposite in fact.
Naturally, debut drop ‘Memories’ carries the emerging genre’s all-important hallmarks of steely percussive jangles, twinkly synths and tenderly looping piano but it’s a pleasant surprise to find Dominique Teymori and Zackarias Ekelund successfully plumbing bittersweet lyrical depths at the first attempt. You can’t help but feel the sincerity in Dominique’s elfish pipes as they gently cradle poignant verse and rousing chorus in sweet succession. Swedish pop truly is the gift that keeps on giving.
‘Memories’ is out now on Hybris.
