Listen: Little Dragon x Odd Future – Seconds
Odd Future (no description of those guys should be needed by now) are hardly known for their meaty production or intricate instrumentation. Tyler’s album Goblin was criticised, among many reasons, for sounding quite feeble and flat – as if it could have been produced on a Fischer-Price keyboard.
Or as US comedian Neil Hamburger recently described Tyler’s VMA-winning ‘Yonkers’: “It sounds like a homeless poet just talking over the sound of the trash compactor at work.”
Producer Syd Tha Kid is seen as largely responsible for the group’s sound and her case isn’t helped by their live performances that normally just involve her in the background pressing a few buttons on a Macbook.
That, then, is why it was so surprising to hear this today: Syd’s take on Swedish synth band Little Dragon‘s ‘Seconds’. It’s brooding, bassy and trippy; far more encompassing than anything she’s shown on an Odd Future track so far.
Let’s just hope she can continue this when she gets back to OFWGKTA HQ.
