If any sound has dominated 2014, it’s undoubtedly that of electro RnB. You can’t walk down the street without hearing it, much less casually peruse a blog or unassumingly listen to the radio. The perpetrators of this sonic monopoly are by now well known: FKA Twigs, Kelela, Dornik et al – and despite the ubiquity of the genre, it is nonetheless one that, when done well, is pretty bloomin’ spectacular. The arrival of Londoner Jones, then, with her confection of a debut track “Deep”, seems like good news all round.
It’s littered with the usual musical suspects – stuttering drum samples, breathy vocals and a humming synth – combined in the name of despairing about the fickle and undoubtedly terrifying nature of falling in love. It’s to her credit that halfway through the song Jones brings in some decidedly 80s bass, undercutting the cool of the cut with some suitably Dad-friendly funk. It’s such a perfect example of “trendy” it almost verges on pastiche, its saviour being how remarkably good it is: I’ve still got it on repeat.
