Zürich songwriter IOKOI has announced her haunting debut single, ‘Growing Young’ will be released on 23 April via emerging Swiss electronica indie Hula Honeys.
The track first surfaced last year, courting wider attention after legendary Japanese fashion guru Yohji Yamamoto took a shine to the eccentric drone-pop sensation; plastering ‘Growing Young’ all over promotional clips for his autumn/winter collection at Selfridges.
With a background in live improvisation at silent movie screenings and theatre performance, it’s no surprise to hear a definite whiff of Karin Dreijer-Andersson’s icy histrionics clinging to IOKOI’s assertive vocals. The skeletal arrangement of hand-beaten percussion and droning bass waves allows the Swiss songstress’ apocalyptic verses to flourish; her plan to reverse the clock and become younger than humanly possible is brought to life with a creepy, repetitive hiss of “turn back time forwards”. Impulsive, spine-tingling stuff.
The 7″ transparent vinyl single is available via Bandcamp and comes in hand-sewn fabric packaging.
