Listen: House Of Wine – Smooth
While the Internet was feverishly to-ing and fro-ing over a certain Mr. Paul’s leaked ‘album’ this weekend; Brooklyn songstress House Of Wine made a decidedly more lowkey, and legal release - her debut EP, Vibes - available through her own Bandcamp page.
Known as Shelby Zoe Coley to her friends, the record represents a promising first stab at self-production for the young DC native. Opening track ‘Smooth’ showcases Coley’s sensual, smoke-filled vocal and her penchant for clock ticking hi-hats, lilting idiophone chimes and gently sprawling synth drones. These simple percussive rhythms, along with her breathy inflection, prove to be cornerstones of the musky, intoxicating sound wafting throughout Vibes. Although it isn’t the future R&B holy grail we’ve sought from Rayners Lane’s finest for so long; House Of Wine provides ample thrills with her faintly industrialized spin on contemporary British electro-soul.
